V.A. USSR Nuggets (Compiled By Ivan Kosmos)

Despite the Iron Curtain, the Soviet Union could not stay away from modern musical trends. Jazz in the 1940s-50s, twist in the early-to-mid 60s, and big beat in the mid-to-late 60s – all were condemned by the authorities. And in the 1970s amateur musical groups called VIA (“Vokal'no-Instrumental'nyy ansambl, or “vocal-instrumental ensemble”) emerged all over the country. Their sound had evolved from upbeat joyful dance rhythms into something more soulful.
In the 60s, musical life was completely controlled by the state. On the one hand, Western groups and their Soviet epigons were under powerful ideological pressure from the leadership and the media. On the other hand, attempts were made to dominate popular culture by opposing Soviet music to the “bourgeois” Western music. All songs were subject to strict censorship; only selected artists, ideologically loyal and approved by the party, had the ability to record and release their music and access to radio and television.
At the same time, the performing level and technical skills of musicians were at a high level, despite the often-terrible quality of the musical instruments. In the 1970s, thanks to the proliferation of tape recorders, many artifacts of dubious quality were created by amateur groups, distributed privately never officially published. Some of these groups even went as far as to compose and perform “hooligan” songs using foul language – something unthinkable in the earlier decades.
This collection includes performances by groups from different parts of the USSR (and a song from a group from Communist Mongolia as a bonus!). In many cases, the exact recording and release dates of these tracks are not available, and were estimated based on word of mouth. Many of the tracks possess a national flavor of a particular region / locality, and are sung in a variety of languages, including Russian, Georgian, Armenian, Lithuanian, Yakut, Bashkir, and even Italian! All available information on these recordings and English translations of the song titles are provided in the accompanying text files.

Soviet music is totally unknown to the rest of the world, it is an honor for me to be able to spread it thanks to my friend Ivan.
I hope you like it.

Thanks Jose and Ivan for this collection. I'm really interested in hearing the sounds from the Soviet republics.

jose kortozirkuito dijo...

Hi Dc Animal.
I think this is a magnificent work that reviews the music of the old USSR, there is very little information about this music.
It is very different from what we hear on a daily basis.
I hope you discover interesting things.

Hello José and Ivan. Thanks for this interesting volume in the Nuggets serie. I'm sure this will double or triple (or whatever) the number of Russian tracks I have in iTunes at the moment (just 4). The only track from the comp I alfeady have is 3.4 ВИА «Аргонавты» - Домик надежд и грёз).

jose kortozirkuito dijo...

Hi Rob.
We are all the same, nobody knows practically anything, so I think this is a very necessary comp.
Cheers
José

jose kortozirkuito dijo...

Hola Daniel.
Incluso Photoshop no me admitía algunos títulos.

Amigo Antoni.

Saludos
Jose

Howdy folks
Big thanks to Jose for the idea to make this compilation, his artwork and spreading the word and music.
As was said it's not the real nuggets as they should be for the garageheads. The first reason is a lack of material available, and the second - my desire for covering more genres and presenting more interesting songs worth to listen with no regard to their quality.
