V.A. Australian Nuggets, 1964-1969 (Compiled by Butterboy)

Garage rock (sometimes called garage punk or '60s punk) is a raw and energetic style of rock and roll that flourished in the mid-1960s, most notably in the United States and Canada, and has experienced a series of subsequent revivals. The style is characterized by basic chord structures played on electric guitars and other instruments, sometimes distorted through a fuzz box, as well as often unsophisticated and occasionally aggressive lyrics and delivery. Its name derives from the perception that groups were often made up of young amateurs who rehearsed in the family garage, although many were professional.
Surf rock and later the Beatles and other beat groups of the British Invasion motivated thousands of young people to form bands between 1963 and 1968. Hundreds of acts produced regional hits, and some had national hits, usually played on AM radio stations. With the advent of psychedelia, numerous garage bands incorporated exotic elements into the genre's primitive stylistic framework. After 1968, as more sophisticated forms of rock music came to dominate the marketplace, garage rock records largely disappeared from national and regional charts, and the movement faded. Other countries in the 1960's experienced similar grass-roots rock movements that have sometimes been characterized as variants of garage rock. During the 1960's garage rock was not recognized as a distinct genre and had no specific name. Garage rock continues to appeal to musicians and audiences who prefer a "back to basics" or "do-it-yourself" musical approach. (Wikipedia)

Australian music was heavily under the influence of British R&B; though in Australia’s case, this was as much an indirect consequence of government-subsidised migration programs as it was a reflection of a skewed cultural change.  Musically, Australia's garage bands were delivering the same angst ridden feelings and adrenalin fuelled sounds as their global counterparts, unashamedly copying riffs from other Invasion bands who'd fused the blues of Chicago & the Mississippi Delta with beat music.  Many of the bands featured on this compilation never made any impact outside of Australia, some never made any impact outside of their respective garages, and their chance for rock' n' roll glory was snuffed out once the psychedelics kicked in.
At a time when Australian bands were developing an original sound, many bands did not record their performances but these performances at venues across the country, whilst not recorded, contributed significantly to the Australian sound.  This set offers 66 tracks of Australian Garage-rock.
Enjoy!
Butterboy

Hi Rob.
If Butterboy is Australian, you already know that the main condition of this series is that its author is an Australian original.
I think it's a very interesting job.
I am happy to surround myself with the best.
Cheers
José

Hi Tom:
It's a good way to get to know Australian music, for many it's just Bee Gees, Easybeats and ... AC / DC!
There are many very good unknown bands. Butterboy is a specialist.
Best wishes
Jose

Hola Jose,

Thanks BB for sharing your time and efford on this project!!!

Saludos y un abrazo. Cuídate

Amigo Commendatore:
Saludote
Jose

Thanks for this Jose. I am a regular at Butterboy's blog also and you are correct, he's a great blogger. He has responded to me and answered questions and is, in my estimation, what a lot of bloggers are not, accessible. You also respond to comments which I enjoy. Thanks to you and Butterboy for this wonderful comp.

Hi Captain Trips.
Thanks for ypur words.
Enjoy of this great comp.
Greetings from Spain.

Hi Hotrodmike.
A blog should be a gathering of friends to share our passion. It should never be a God and the parishioners of him, unfortunately there are many like that, totally inaccessible.
Both Butterboy and I are simple people willing to share what may be interesting to music friends.
I hope you enjoy this excellent collection.
Cheers
Jose

Mon ami Korto,

Butterboy, greetings from France! And many thanks.

Jose

Like Butterboy, I'm Australian and in the mid to late 1960s my parents and I lived near a venue that hosted local dances and pop/rock bands. Although I was too young to attend the dances, every Saturday night I would sit on the back porch and listen to many of the bands featured here playing their hearts out. It was wonderful time that today's generation would never experience.

Good health to you all.

Hi frined
Nice words, the memories of adolescence are indelible, and music is part of our lives.
As a child I liked to listen to the orchestras that played instrumental songs at the beginning of the show that I didn't know but I liked. Possibly they would be versions of the great hits.
Greetings from Spain.

Orlando dijo...

No tenia ni idea que
en las Antipodas
existiera esta
excelencia , quizá
escogeria a Atlantics
por ser las mas moderna
de las tres , pero solo.
eso, greetings .

jose kortozirkuito dijo...

Amigo Orlando.

Saludotes
