THREE-CHORD ROCK INTO THE SPOTLIGHT
“Louie Louie” was like a lot of other early Garage Rock songs, born from an R&B impulse. In its immediate aftermath, an even more powerful impulse made its way into garages all across the USA,but mainly it remained a regional phenomenon.Teenagers in each city would tell you their local bands were the absolute kings of the sound. That’s the garage element a bigger drum fill,a much more pronounced organ riff, and a bunch of guys just kind of making noise. Frat Rock was a raw and energetic style of rock and roll that reached its zenith in the early 1960's.The genre is named after the fact that many of these bands played gigs at fraternity houses. It was considered an important influence and precursor to garage rock, and many of the bands associated with the genre are also considered early Garage Rock. The Frat Rock genre itself also had numerous outside influences, including Soul music,Hot Rod & Surf Music,R&B,Rockn'Roll.Frat Rock was designed first and foremost for the drunken party, a bigger drum fill, a much more pronounced organ riff, and a bunch of guys just kind of making noise. The genre ran out of steam around the mid 60's giving way to Garage Punk,no need to write anything about USA Garage Punk...who doesn't know it ??? Some bands survived but the majority of the bands faded away.Accomplices were studies, work and not least the recruitment for the war in Vietnam, where many of these guys ended up fighting.
Towards the end of the 80's-90's and early 2000's there was a sort of Frat Rock Revival played by bands like The Untamed Youth (of the Genius Deke Dickerson),Saturn V and Barbary Coasters,The Outta Site,The Swingin' Neckbreakers,The Royal Pendletons,The Ogres and many others.
Un saluto a tutti e un ringraziamento a Jose'.
