The emergence of Canadian garage rock in the 1960s was fueled by a unique head start in the British Invasion. While American radio wouldn't embrace the Beatles until early 1964, Capitol Records of Canada released "She Loves You" in September 1963. It became a massive hit in the fall of that year, turning Canada into an immediate testing ground for the "Beatlebeat" sound.
This early exposure sparked a DIY explosion across the provinces. Local teenagers, armed with imported British R&B records and cheap Department store guitars, began forming bands to replicate the raw energy they heard on the airwaves. This led to a distinct North American hybrid: the melodic sensibilities of the Merseybeat era fused with the gritty, fuzzed-out aggression that would eventually define the Canadian garage scene.

Before national radio regulations existed, the scene was deeply segregated into vibrant regional hubs, each with a distinct musical flavor:
Toronto: As the "main stage" of the era, the Toronto scene was a hotbed for eclectic sounds. The Yorkville district served as a bohemian crossroads for youth rebellion and experimental live music, producing standout acts like The Ugly Ducklings,The Quiet Jungle & The Fringe.
Montreal: This scene contributed a grittier, blues-based sound. The Haunted became legendary for their 1966 garage classic "1-2-5". Quebec also fostered a significant French-language garage rock community (often called yé-yé or garage punk) with bands like Les Lutins and The Sinners.
Winnipeg: Known for its isolated but intense energy, Winnipeg's scene was dominated by Chad Allan and the Reflections (who later became The Guess Who). Their hit cover of "Shakin' All Over" is considered a seminal moment in Canadian rock history.

Western Canada: Other regions developed their own loyal followings; Vancouver's scene featured bands like The Nocturnals and The Painted Ship, while 49th Parallel emerged as a notable garage punk force from Calgary.

Amigo Fulvio.

Simply wonderful!
Thanks, Gary Field and Jose for the wisdom of involving the community that visits here.
Cheers.
¡Muchas gracias, Jose!
Thanks a lot, Gary!
Yesah, another Nuggets. And by Gary Field! (we have emailed about Kinks covers). Thanks Jose and Gary for 2 hours of musical pleasure. I probably already have a lot (I see familiar names), but I'm almost sure Gary will surprise me with a couple of new bands or songs.
Amigo Ugamremile.

My great friend Butterby.
I'm really pleased with how this blog is going, where so many friends are involved, and each one shares their experience, which in almost every case is superior to mine.
Gary's work is a perfect example.
Regards.
Jose
Amiga Concha.
Saludos
Jos
My friend Rob.
That's the best thing about these series, that the locals are the best connoisseurs of their music.
I'm sure there are songs that will surprise you.
I've been looking for someone for that country for years; now my dream countries are Denmark, Germany, and Mexico. Any ideas?
Cheers,
Jose
Yes I do: ask for volunteers on TwilightZone-RideYourPony
Finshed listening, Gary. I have 18 new songs in iTune, of which I like Treat me bad by The Heard best. So thanks a lot! I missed only 3 songs on your excellent compilation that have more than 3 stars in my iTunes: : Who do you love by Ronnie Hawkins & The Hawks *****(for me the best song from Canada in the 60's; what a solo by Robbie Robertson), That's my girl (rotten to the core) by The Great Scots **** and Go away by Underworld ***. But ofcourse that's just a matter of taste :-)
Robb,
I had to leave off a few as well, I couldn't add another Great Scots track I had in mind and I forgot to add The Nocturnals! Good call on Ronnie, I think I would've been a toss-up between WDYL or 'Matchbox' or maybe 'Further Up On The Road'. Maybe Jose will let me do a third disc...NOT! I don't he'd put up waiting another six months to a year for a disc.. anyways, thank you everybody for the kind words, I'm pretty happy with it overall.. and a big thank you to Jose for believing I should be the one to take this on, It's been a real honor.
My friend Gary.
The honor has been mine. Rob made the masterful "60 Dutch Nuggets," plus "More Dutch Nuggets" and "Even More Dutch Nuggets," so why not continue with Canadian Nuggets?
Time is not important. One of my favorite phrases, and one I try to apply in life, is Peter Seeger's: "A time for every purpose."
Greetings from Spain.

My friend Jean-Jacques.
This Nuggets collection, I think, is gaining prestige. It's just a matter of finding the right person, in this case, Gary.

Mon ami Jose,
Saludos
Jose
Oh lord, give me strength! :)
