V.A. Kom Van Dat Dak Af (First Dutch Rock And Roll Records) By Rob Kopp

Thanks for the opportunity, Jose, to present something again after 60 Dutch Nuggets. This time the focus is on Dutch "Rock 'n' Roll", when you can call it like that.
In 2003 Dutch music journalist Constant Meijers wrote the book ÒKom van dat dak afÓ (Come down from that roof). Chapter 5 is called ÒDe 40 eerste Nederlandse rock & roll-platenÓ (The 40 first Dutch rock & roll records). It contains a list of 40 records up to and including the song thatÕs generally regarded as the first Dutch rock & roll record: ÒKom van dat dak afÓ by Peter (Peter Koelewijn) & Zijn Rockets (january 1960).
Ever since this book was published I've been trying to collect them all 40 in one kind of form (I didn't care that much if it was on a scratchy 78, 45 or 33-rpm or even just an MP3) and in 2016 I finally could complete the collection when I found the last one on You Tube: Ik ben existentialist - Rosetta Groen. On that last song the text is more rock 'n' roll than the music is: Ik ben existentialist, ik weet eigenlijk niet wat het is, maar ik voel, ik voel ik ben het (I am existentialist, in fact I don't know what it is, but I feel, I feel I am one).
I wouldnÕt call the music on all the other 39 tracks rock & roll either, and sometimes the author is smuggling a bit with the date of release (some were released AFTER Kom van dat dak af), but it´s nice to have them all 40 together.

02 Bill Kilima & His Singing Cowboys - Ragtime cowboy Joe (46)
03 Ramblers & Ferry Barendse - Hey-ba-ba-re-bop (47)
04 Melody Sisters & Black & White - Sh-boom (54)
05 Mena Moeria Minstrels o.l.v. Rudi Wairata - Honolulu rock-a-roll-a (56)
06 Melody Sisters - Onder de klok (=Rock around the clock) (56)
07 Maddy Bleize & Rockets - Let's have a party (57)
08 Spelbrekers - Rock around the clock (57)
09 Bee Bee Sisters - Rock and roll waltz (57)
10 Cees de  Lange - Rock en roll (57)
11 Fouryo's - Bye bye love (57)
12 Cocktail Trio - Oe-ie-oe-a-a (=Witch doctor) (58)
13 Ben Hendriks Skiffle Group - Worried man blues (58)
14 Piet Sybrandy - Meisje ben je thuis (58)
15 Tielman Brothers - Rock little baby of mine (58)
16 Meteoor Kwartet - Tequila (58)
17 Butterflies - Willem word wakker (=Wake up little Susie) (58)
18 Ferry 'Rock' Barendse - Rock and roll dat blijft bestaan (=Rock 'n roll is here to stay) (58)
19 Milly Scott + Rocky Roll & His Rock 'n Rollers - Rock-a-beatin' boogie (58)
20 Andy Field (=Johnny Hoes) - Come on guitar (59)
21 Tielman Brothers - Record hop (59)
22 Paul Gimbel - Sugar bowl rock (59)
23 Fred Franken & Rocking Diamonds - Wild one (59)
24 Lydia & Her Melody Strings - Send me the pillow (59)
25 Black Dynamites - Ready to rock (59)
26 Rein de Vries - Ik ben 17 jaar (59)
27 Selvera's - My happiness (59)
28 Fouryo's - De spijkerbroek (=Personality) (59)
29 Rosetta Groen - Ik ben existentialist (59)
30 Imca Marina - Net zestien jaar (=Only sixteen) (59)
31 Blue Diamonds Ð (ÔTil) I kissed you (59)
32 Pim Maas - All right baby (59)
33 Annelies de Graaf Ð Mr. Music (59)
34 Hurricane Rollers Ð The hurricane beat (59)
35 Diny Snyders & Rocking Stars - De rockschool (59)
36 Wim Bitter - Teenager muziek (60)
37 Leedy Trio - Itsy bitsy teeny weeny Honolulu strand bikini (=Itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini) (60)
38 RenŽ & His Alligators - Knockin' on your window (60)
39 Fouryo's - Makin' love (60)

Of course the selection has been subjective. I added 10 bonus tracks that in my opnion also could have been candidates for the final 40:

41 Frans Wouters & Orkest (Eddy Christiani) - The windmill (41)
42 Eddy Christiani - Hilversum Expresse (53)
43 Mena Moeria Minstrels (feat. Rudi Wairata) - Ticklin' the strings (53)
44 Ferry 'Rock' Barendse - Rock 'n roll mops (56)
45 Ferry 'Rock' Barendse - ‚a rock, a va (56)
46 Ferry 'Rock' Barendse - T'as le bonjour d'Alfred (56)
47 Rudi Wairata & Hawaiian Minstrels - Rock and roll and breezes (58)
48 Cappy Bianco (Jo Olivier) - The cat (59)
49 Ronnie Tober - Who taught you how (59)
50 Tielman Brothers - Swing it up (59)

But these 10 tracks are very subjective as well and I'm sure there will be people who will say: How could you have forgotton that one!?
With this compilation comes a Word-document of 14 pages with all the relative parts in numerical order from PLATENBOEK deel 1 (the green book), PLATENBOEK deel 2 (the red book) and PLATENBOEK deel 3 (the yellow book), the 3 issues of Platenclub Utrecht (see www.platenclubutrecht.nl) about Dutch pop music in the 50´s and 60´s. Please see that document for more information about the artists (photos, small biography, line-ups) and the records (label number, picture of the label or the sleeve, remarks).
Finally: If you have never seen or heard The Tielman Brothers before, go to youtube and watch every second (5:58) of the live performance they did on Dutch TV. I added Rollin' & Rock as hidden bonus track in track 50. No wonder The Beatles were watching them while they were playing in Hamburg.

Rob Kopp

Tielman Brothers - Record hop (59)
Black Dynamites - Ready to rock (59)

I just added this post in Facebook in around 10 Dutch Facebook groups: 60 Dutch Nuggets was on Spanish music blog Tommentón en la cuadra the compilation that had the most views in 2020 http://tommentonenlacuadra.blogspot.com/2020/10/va-60-dutch-nuggets-compiled-by-rob.html.
I was allowed to make a second compilation and that has become Kom van dat dak af. It contains the first 40 Dutch rock 'n roll records (from the book Kom van dat dak af by Constant Meijers) with 10 bonus tracks. http://tommentonenlacuadra.blogspot.com/2021/04/va-kom-van-dat-dak-af-first-dutch-rock.html

Hi Jean Jackes:
Welcome to this blog.
All credit goes to Rob. He is extraordinary, all his works are impeccable.
I think there must not be much about the first Dutch RNR.
Cheers
José

for me it is always an honor to have your work on my blog. And this as always is very interesting and unpublished.
There will be more!
Best wishes

Hello Jose, interesting work you done here. Thanks for it.RocknRoll is not my favourite music, but I am thankful to get to learn "new" music and here are only songs I didn't hear before. Thanks for your offer! Greetings Thomas

My friend Thomas.
You like me and most of us who are not from the Netherlands, we did not know these songs.
Thanks to Rob for revealing them to us.
Cheers

Saludote
Jose

Rob Kopp dijo...

Hello Ceniceros. I don't know if I've understood your question completely, but did you ask why Dutch pop was perfect in the 60's and 70's and since then not so good? Well, I can only agree. And I don't think it's the breakfast. In my opinion the 80's were horrible because of the synthesizer, not only in The Netherlands, but everywhere. The last 10 years The Netherlands are famous for the deejays. Not my style, I'm afraid. I think the Dutch beat bands in the 60's were terrific. I stopped listening to Dutch bands in the 70's, with a few exceptions like Earth & Fire and The Rousers. I liked the neo garage bands since 1984 again, like The Otherside (of Michel Terstegen, owner of record shop Da Capo in Utrecht, the best Dutch record shop; unfortunately Michel passed away 10 years ago) and every band with Marcel Kruup. PLATENBOEK part 4 will be about the 60's after the 60's; bands from after the 60's that were influenced by music from the 60's. See www.platenclubutrecht.nl

No sé.

Bueno, pues nada: otra vez a currar.

Saludos mil.

jose kortozirkuito dijo...

Amigo Rick:

Thanks for your kind message of welcome. very appreciated !

@ceniceros
@Rob

To modestly complete Rob, you have nice recent bands from Netherlands like De Keefmen, The Waistcoats and DeSoto to only name the ones who come to mind without research.

jose kortozirkuito dijo...

Hi Jean Jackes
I'll listen carefully to the bands you mention, but it seems true that the "golden age" was the 60s and early 70s.
I hope to continue enjoying your visits.
Cheers
Jose

Rob Kopp dijo...

@Rick: Thanks for your kind words
@Jean-Jacques: Keefmen and Waistcoats will surely be in PLATENBOEK part 4. I have to admit that I don't know DeSoto. Do you mean the band that had CD Nearly covered (1992)?

Jean-Jacques Mura dijo...

@Jose
I think that for a lot a people, the golden age is the period of the 60's and early 70's everywhere !!!

@Rob

Yes, it's this band. Their only record is produced by Peter Gunn of The Inmates' fame.

Ed dijo...

Wow, great stuff!
Dankjewel!

Hi Ed
A very careful work by friend Rob Kopp, songs that few of us had heard before.
Enjoy!
