V.A. A Trip To Toytown (Complete, 5 CDs) The Best Popsike Collection In The World

"Let’s end this rant by saying that if five hour long Jerry Garcia guitar noodles, or Tommy Hall banging on that damn jug while Roky whines to infinity is your idea of musical nirvana then you’re in the wrong place and there’s no point in you reading on."

Hasta la semana próxima.

Hi Jose,

Great post. I had this one ready to post tomorrow. (The would is full of coincidences), but will leave it for a while.
I been enjoying your post very much.

Cheers

jose kortozirkuito dijo...

Hi Butterboy.
Personally this is the best comp. from Popsike, and I think it should be spread.
Coincidences exist. Years ago I published the album "Psychedelic Voyage" simultaneously with another blog friend, without knowing it either of the two
This shows that many "unofficial" compilations are better than "official".
Cheers

Many thanks for this. Looks great !

Hola Bab.
A disfrutarlos.

A disfrutarla.

Hola Jose,
Socorro!
Bueno, ahora estoy recapacitando escuchando The Third Bardo...

Seguro.

No pretendo emponerlos a nadie. Menos mal.
Yo escucho Rock, Pop, Garage, Blues, Rhythm and Blues, Soul, Salsa, Bossa Nova, Reggae.

Mark Kirk dijo...

Hello Jose,
I really enjoyed finding that you've put A Trip To Toytown on your site, and reading the comments - good and not so good - was a lot of fun. As it was a lot of fun putting it together and creating the artwork for it all those years ago... 14 years and a god damn pandemic thrown in for good measure!
As I told Mark Frumento and Mick Capewell when I asked if it would be alright if I made a reality out of their work, Toytown has been a passion of mine since around 1974 when I first discovered The Idle Race (courtesy of 'Imposters of Life's Magazine' on Daffodil Records). I also purchased David Bowie's 'Images 1966-1967' around the same time... as I've often read, the records you buy at 14 years of age form a lifelong musical taste (or something to that effect). Any way, that has truly been the case for me.
I hope one day, a label (Grapefruit, are you listening?) take these further and give Toytown a true and proper release.

Thanks again Jose, you made my day.

jose kortozirkuito dijo...

My friend Mark.
Your comment has really moved me, I think it was fair that this compilation was available to the public, since in Marmalade Skies the links have been down for years.
Everything I tell in the presentation is true, it is my favorite pop-sike collection, when I first heard it, I think my general view of music changed.
I have been in contact with Mark Frumento who was the one who told me that you were the author. Congratulations on your good taste.
Yes, it is a comp. in the style of what Grapefruit publishes, but not being physically available, gives it a mythical aura, it is all more magical.
Thank you for this gift and you have my e-mail in "Mis datos personales", top right, in case you want anything.
Greetings from Spain.
José

Unknown dijo...

Hi...it's been years since I had the idea to do this compilation. I got together with El Marko Frumento and we selected 119 tracks (I wanted an odd number). The illustrations on the website come from an old ABC book published by Mothercare, that I found in a charity shop. Mark Kirk then put the CDs together and magically the songs fit snugly onto 5 CDs. I've copied them to anyone that has asked over the years, but it's nice that they are here and available. Cheers!

jose kortozirkuito dijo...

Hi, friend.
It really was injustice that this collection was impossible to find. Well, the title of the post is "The Best Popsike Collection In The World" which I totally believe.
I contacted Mark Frumento and he told me that he had not made the selection, but Mark Kirk, who at that time I did not know, but that time later we have had contact, he is a very passionate person.
Thank you for your words, but what is your name?
Greetings from Spain
José

Mick Capewell dijo...

My name is Mick Capewell of the Marmalade Skies site. I chose the tracks with Mark Frumento...we only disagreed on a few... then I did all the pages on the website, illustrated like I said, with pics from an infant's ABc book published by the shop Mothercare. After that Mark Kirk got the CDs together along with the fabulously creepy artwork. At first they could be downloaded from the site, but Rapidshare went out of business. Over the years the project became a bit of a cult collection I guess.
I haven't done anything to Marmalade Skies in Years (though I still pay the fee to keep it available, just in case) because I got into doing shows for local and internet radio. I still do several show every week on whitecliffsradio.co.uk and hundreds of my old shows are available on Mixcloud
https://www.mixcloud.com/mickcapewell5/
Not all the shows are Psych...I always do Prog shows, Roots & Blues shows etc etc.
Mark and I talked about doing a 70's Singer-Songwriter collection along similar lines to A Trip To Toytown, but we never finished it, and over the years other people have put out those kind of comps anyway. Still, it's nice to see that A Trip To Toytown still lives on and is still being enjoyed.
Cheers...

Mick Capewell dijo...

By the way, I'm sure you've noticed that there's one 'imposter' song in the set..."Mr Jewell Went Away". I wrote the words for that, and the brilliant Damien Youth (who was Julian Starr in Walter Ghoul's Lavender Brigade) put them to music and recorded the 'demo'. Mark Frumento insisted that the song be included in A Trip To Toytown, despite my protests...

jose kortozirkuito dijo...

Hello Mick.
Now I know who you are, I know you from the "Regal Zone 2" forum and I recently sent you my vote for "Psych album poll".
Very interesting your comments on the gestation of this collection.
"Marmalade Skies" was the website that helped me understand the whole British psychedelic movement. When you opened the site, you were blown away by the beauty of its design and all its incredible content. It would be nice to give it a second life.
By the way, 11 years ago, at the beginning of this blog, I dedicated an entry to this site:
http://tommentonenlacuadra.blogspot.com/2011/05/marmalade-skies.html
I've always liked to publish "unofficial" things, with the intention that they don't disappear and I've wanted to write to Mark Kirk for a long time, to try to make a database of those works and try to recover the most interesting ones. You are invited to this initiative. Contact me by e-mal, available in my profile.
"Mr Jewell Went Away" is definitely a great song and I thought it was from the same era as the rest of the songs. Congratulations!
Keep in touch.
